From a historical stand-point, band-gap engineering will continue to provide new opportunities for fundamental materials science, device physics as well as opportunities to be able to manufacture semiconductor devices, circuits and systems with novel applications. The ability to tailor the morphology of semiconductors in order to obtain the desired properties will add another dimension to the fundamental physics, materials science and engineering of these materials for a variety of applications.

The proposed book will address new dimensions and novel opportunities, both from a fundamental materials science point of view as well as the ability to manufacture some of these devices. In particular, the book will focus on Black Silicon, its evolution, the present and prospects. Several case studies and examples of BSi devices will be described. This book also presents a discussion on the fundamentals, process-property correlations and manufacturing methods of BSi. The various methods for morphing the surface of the material are described. Comparisons of the surfaces of BSi fabricated by various techniques are presented. The thermal, electrical, electronic, and optical properties of BSi are described. Examples of major applications of BSi are reported. Possible future directions and technological evolutions in the research, development and manufacture of BSi devices are identified. A detailed summary of the intellectual property based on BSi is presented.
